Raw food, sunflowers, and Food Font! Food Font at the Root Cafe

Raw food, sunflowers, and Food Font! Food Font at the Root Cafe

On Saturday September 29th,  Food Font will be at the Root Café event, a “Sunflower Affair.”  This event is a 5 course raw/whole food dinner, and at the event people will be invited to make a letter out of raw food. After the letter is photographed – each person can then eat the letter.

This is a ticket event, please contact the Root Café if you wish to attend.

About the event:
(from the Root Café website)

“Sunflowers, the bright bursting sign that summer is at its end and fall is upon us. All season the sunflower soaks in the rays of sunshine and the laughter in the garden. It grows strong and tall to support its many blooms. Just as the heat peaks, the sunflower explodes into blossom, giving us the sign that the harvest is upon us.  The sunflower marks the time of balance where reflection of the abundant season and planning for the leaner seasons meet.

We invite you to join the Root cafe in partnership with our farmer, cleveland crops, in celebrating our harvest of raw and whole foods by creating in our community a space for recognizing this important time of year.

It is our mission to provide our community with locally grown, raw inspired whole foods.  Be the first to taste some of our newest explorations in nourishment at our private harvest dinner and dance celebration on September 29th.  It starts with a  5 course dinner from 8pm -10pm, followed by a dance celebration from 10pm-1am.

As we will engage all of your senses starting with aroma and taste, we’ll move on to nourish your sense of sight and touch with the soulful activity of creating ‘Fonts from Food’ with Kristen Baumlier.  Finally, we will treat your ears to live music by Xe La koustic during dinner, bringing live jazz, and soul  music. After the plates are cleared shake your blossoms at our awesome dance party! DJ TBA”

Alphabets made of String Beans, Cucumbers, and Yellow Cauliflower – Food Font at the RIPE! festival

Alphabets made of String Beans, Cucumbers, and Yellow Cauliflower – Food Font at the RIPE! festival

This past weekend, Food Font was at the RIPE! Fest at the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland, OH.  In the sun, rain, and hail – people stopped by to make letters out of local produce.  On Saturday, two alphabets were made; one out of cucumbers and one out of broccoli and cauliflower.  The cauliflower that we used is yellow and is called “cheesy broccoli” – but no cheese is involved.  On Sunday, it was string beans all the way; a uppercase and lowercase alphabet was made out of yellow and green string beans.  Some of the alphabets we made used the Spanish alphabet checklist – so we made some letters with accents also – so the alphabet can be used for English or Spanish

The vegetables were from Schwartz Fruit and Vegetable Farm which is located in  Chesterland, OH.  Thanks again to Edible Cleveland for helping with the event and sharing a table with us!

The pictures from the event are posted on the Food Font Flickr site., and also can be viewed in the slideshows below.

Meograph – A New 4 Dimensional Storytelling Tool

Meograph – A New 4 Dimensional Storytelling Tool

I recently got a press release about Meograph, a new online  tool that allows users to create and share interactive stories using Google Earth and Google search.  Users can select media that assembled on a timeline.  Google map images, llinks, a voiceover, and other media can be used to create multimedia videos.

Founder Misha Leybovich wanted to create the tool so that journalists, educators and individuals could create stories in an intuitive and easy way. “Everyone’s creative and has a story to tell, but not everyone has the skills to use professional tools like Final Cut Pro,” said Leybovich. “We’ve made it easy to create a professional story, using simple structured prompts.”

On the website there are several example of what can be made with the tool.  This includes a story about about Whitney’s Houston’s life, the history of women’s rights in the USA, and a news story about the Trayvon Martin case.  I spent some time watching the videos, which have a constant background of Google map which changes with each event or key point of the story.  The look and feel of each piece is similar to a segment you might see on a news program.

One feature that I appreciated is that videos could be embedded within the story.  During the piece that explored the progression of Whitney Houston’s life, I was able to click on a music video of her singing while the map in the background showed the location of where the video was filmed.

The BETA version of the tool is up and running, and you can use it toyou’re your own story that can use events, links, photos and video.   Your video can then be embedded in any website or social network.  I have not tried authoring it yet – but am thinking about trying it out for one of my classes.  Maybe the history of video or knit art…

Food Font – at Ingenuity Festival September 15-16

Food Font – at Ingenuity Festival September 15-16

Food Font will be at the Ingenuity festival this weekend on Saturday and Sunday September 15th and 16th  from 12-5pm. We will be making alphabets out of local food.

Two alphabets are planned – one made from corn and one made of coffee and tea.

We are sharing a table with Edible Foods Cleveland magazine, so you can check out the new Fall issue and make a letter.

Ingenuity is in a new location this year, near the Science museum and Rock hall in two giant warehouses.  I am interested to see how the festival works in a more centralized setup.

Come stop by and make a letter !
