KBaumlier – Named one of the Most Interesting People in Cleveland by Cleveland Magazine

This November I learned that Cleveland Magazine had chosen me as a recipient of the Most Interesting People in Cleveland Award.  I was interviewed by Kim Schneider, who writes about food for the magazine and also is the features editor.

At the award reception,I got to meet some interesting people who also received the reward this year (and also got to eat some really great cupcakes and french fries.)

The article is in the current magazine, and also can be seen online on their website.

Thanks Cleveland Magazine for giving me this award!

295 Posts Later : tinySplash bigView is Over One Year Old!

Last Fall I was on sabbatical from work, and spent part of the time rebuilding my website.  I decided that I wanted to make a blog that focused on art and innovation related to alternative energy, food, and design.  I made a commitment to post at least 4-5 things each week.

I am pretty amazed when I look back on all the interesting things that I found, visited, or experienced and wrote about.  I also am proud that I have kept up with  the commitment to posting on the blog.  I have posted every week except for my one week vacation (which was last week), when I did not post, tweet, or share on any social network or website.

The first post on tinySplash bigView was on October 21, 2011 and was “The only thing you can’t buy used is food.” Film Screening: Urban Roots.  I had gone to a local screening of the movie, and wrote a synopsis and brief review of this movie which focuses on urban farming in Detroit.

When I look back on the posts on this site – I see that I am increasingly writing about things related to food, community and creativity.  There still is an occasional interesting eco-friendly packaging idea or alternative energy design post, but less than a year ago.

Goals for this year – are to go through and organize things better by tags, so it is easy to find things in categories.  Also, update some aspects of the site.

Many of you get my weekly/bi-weekly newsletter – which highlights the new posts on the blog.  Thanks for reading my posts and for the occasional post and email.  I look forward to seeing how the blog evolves by the next birthday.

Happy birthday one year old!

Food Font – at Ingenuity Festival September 15-16

Food Font – at Ingenuity Festival September 15-16

Food Font will be at the Ingenuity festival this weekend on Saturday and Sunday September 15th and 16th  from 12-5pm. We will be making alphabets out of local food.

Two alphabets are planned – one made from corn and one made of coffee and tea.

We are sharing a table with Edible Foods Cleveland magazine, so you can check out the new Fall issue and make a letter.

Ingenuity is in a new location this year, near the Science museum and Rock hall in two giant warehouses.  I am interested to see how the festival works in a more centralized setup.

Come stop by and make a letter !

Kbaumlier To Give 2 Food Font Talks at PechaKucha and Local Foods Ignite Talks

Kbaumlier To Give 2 Food Font Talks at PechaKucha and Local Foods Ignite Talks

This week I am giving 2 talks about Food Font here in Cleveland.

This Wednesday I am presenting about Food Font at the PechaKucha Night Cleveland – Volume 16.
I was part of a PechaKucha event a couple of years ago – and really enjoyed it.  The list of presenters looks really interesting, so it should be a fun night.  The format for each talk is 20 slides for 20 seconds.

PechaKucha Night is taking place in Star Plaza in Playhouse Square. PechaKucha, Japanese for “the sound of conversation”, and pronounced “peh-chak-chah”, is a free event where 10-14 creative people to present their work, ideas and obsessions.  Each presenter is allowed to show 20 images of their work and each image is pre-timed to 20 seconds a piece.

I also am presenting  at the Local Food Ignite Talks at the Ingenuity Festival.  The event was organized by the City of Cleveland Office of Sustainability who selected local food champions to speak about their ideas and personal or professional passions, accompanied by 20 slides. Each slide will be displayed for 15 seconds, and slides will automatically advance.

I am looking forward to talking about the ideas and vision behind Food Font.  If you are in Cleveland – come to either or both of the events!

Papaya and Tomatoes – Kbaumlier Images on a Billboard in Detroit, MI

Papaya and Tomatoes – Kbaumlier Images on a Billboard in Detroit, MI

Earlier this summer, I participated in the Digital Billboard Art Project, a project where artists can submit images to be displayed on a public digital billboard.  I had 45 images in the show that were shown on a billboard near a highway in the Detroit Metro area (Macomb County), MI.  The images were of food – in both abstract and recognizable views, combined with words and slogans often used by advertisers to promote packaged food.  A tomato with the word “SAME GREAT TASTE,” a papaya with the words “50% LESS FAT*” and images of rice, soybeans, a peach, and cheese were in the series.

Each of the foods in the series has a unique story related to genetic engineering or modern farming practices.  I was interested to be part of this show since it was in Detroit, a city which is facing challenges of food access and food equity.

The images from the show are now up on flickr, and there is a new video of the billboard, which shows the images in a slideshow timed video.  It is interesting to see how the images appear in the context of being in public on the street.

The Billboard Art Project is a project that acquires digital billboards normally used for advertising and repurposes them as roadside galleries – showing images from artists. Types of work that may be displayed include images created specifically for the billboard as well as images of previously made art adapted to the format. No two Billboard Art Project shows are alike; each city features new work.

This year upcoming shows included other locations such as Richmond, VA; Salem, OR; Albany, NY, and Atlanta, GA.  The Detroit show was unique in that the images were up for a month.
