Wireless Drones in the Landscape: Liam Young and Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today

Wireless Drones in the Landscape: Liam Young and Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today

Tomorrows Thoughts Today is a London-based think tank started by Liam Young and Darryl Chen that explores topics such as urbanism, sustainability, utopia, urban planning, architecture, land use, and public space.

One recent interactive installation was called Electronic Countermeasures and was performed live at the GLOW Festival  in Eindhoven NL in the evening. The project is an aerial drone choreography performed by “drone pilots.” Using a local wifi network, the modified glowing “quadrocopters” did a choreographed in-air performance.

Visitors could interact with them by calling specific phone numbers. Dialing the number made the drones break formation, and approach.  The drones would light up, flicker and glow while becoming a pirate broadcast network or a mobile infrastructure that passers-by could interact with.  The more interaction, the more animated the drones would become.

About the project the artists write, “Today we are much closer to our virtual community than we are to our real neighbors. This death of distance has created new forms of city based around ephemeral digital connections rather than physical geography. In this context the Electronic Countermeasures explores the design and manufacture of a flock of interactive autonomous drones that form their own place specific, local, wifi community and pirate file sharing network.

Liam Young will be an Artist in Residence this Spring, and is the first recipient of San Francisco’s Headlands Art Centres ‘ new Architecture/Environment Artist in Residence award.    Young’s residency will begin with a series of sorties (or flights/attacks), through the surrounding landscape to survey the ecology and obsolete military technologies of the Marin Headlands.   Large-scale maps and drawings will be the basis for a series of small robotic installations and architectural prosthetics, which will be installed on site in the landscape.

The residency will conclude with a series choreographed aerial robotic drone performances titled ‘Birds of Prey’ launched from the abandoned Nike missile silo sites. Also part of the residency will be an intensive interdisciplinary design workshop and curated storytelling event in the surrounding woods.

I Heart Cleveland: Little Miss Cleveland

I Heart Cleveland: Little Miss Cleveland

Yesterday I attended artist Sarah Paul’s lecture “I Heart Cleveland: The Strategic Seduction of a City” at the Guilford House at  Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) campus.

Before the lecture began, Paul invited the audience to take a Little Miss Cleveland calendar, a calendar she has made with 12 images of Little Miss Cleveland, the beauty queen from Cleveland that is a persona of Paul.  The calendar has provocative images of Little Miss Cleveland posing in front of memorable places in Cleveland including Lake Erie, the flats, and the Cleveland skyline.

The lecture started by the hosts of the event surrounding Paul with boxes of pizza.

Paul began by presenting some of the early roots of her work which is music, singing, and being in bands.  We heard an early clip of the first song she wrote and recorded and Paul talked about the power of music to transcend reality, engage an audience, and exist as an intersection of art, music, and pop culture.

Paul’s artwork in recent years has explored issues of gender fluidity and the spectrum between the male and female.  Some of her past works have included a video about being in love with a large My Little Pony and an installation of a My Little Pony brushing bar which had real size ponytail hair pieces the audience could brush and braid while under a looming 20 foot projection of Paul as Captain Firepants (an alter ego of hers) becoming a beautiful flower girl.

Originally from Buffalo, NY, Paul moved to Cleveland in 2007 and fell in love with the city.  As we know, Cleveland has a self –depriating quality to it.  People often love to hate it or talk about how it could/should be different – but Paul developed a unique relationship with the city which made her as Paul said, “ heart Cleveland.”

When Paul settled into her artist live/work space after moving to the area, she found that out her large windows she had a unique view of the smokestacks and flames of a steel factory nearby.  She would watch the smokestacks, videotape the smoke and flames, and grew to feel that they were neighbors and had a personal connection and dialogue.

During the Winter, the factory closed down for a few months – and the smoke and flames disappeared.  Paul felt a great loss, as though a neighbor had moved away.  Little Miss Cleveland was born out of her inspiration to call the smoke and fire back. Paul projected a video piece of the smokestacks that she had made on the windows of her space – a poetic way to try to call the smokestacks back.  Paul become a siren seducing the city to bring the smokestacks back to life.

Eventually the smoke and fire came back, like a neighbor returning from a vacation, but Paul felt inspired to continue to embrace and celebrate Cleveland in her work.

As Little Miss Cleveland, she dressed as a plus-size beauty queen and began to attend Indian baseball games.  Over time the vendors and workers at the stadium began to recognize her –and baseball fans wanted to know who Little Miss Cleveland is.

Who is Little Miss Cleveland?  In an interview with Cool Cleveland Paul said, “ She’s just this really playful giant chubby girl. She’s very sincere….I’ve crafted this narrative and this character and all of that, but the passion and the motivation behind it is rooting for the underdog that Cleveland is, that the Rust Belt is. There’s a sense of humor in it and in her; she’s this giant, self-crowned beauty queen. She’s embracing herself, her large body. Whatever is technically “wrong” with her, she embraces all of that and celebrates it to a point where she becomes this sexy, vivacious irresistible character.”

In her talk Paul explained that the work is for herself and also for Cleveland.  Little Miss Cleveland is in love with the city, the steel mill and the lake.

Paul has continued to make appearances, make music, and art installations  as Little Miss Cleveland.  Each form explores the blurring of art and life.  Paul and Little Miss Cleveland present a ironic position – promoting loving Cleveland, which often is seen as an underdog city.

In Paul’s closing comments she talked about blurring the mainstream and high art genre, and the invented myth.

What is Little Miss Cleveland doing next?  She has some upcoming music shows with her band Now That’s Class and an upcoming show at the Sculpture Center in Cleveland in April.  Everyone is invited – and you might find that you heart Cleveland a little bit more after spending time with Little Miss Cleveland.

The power of smell: Aroma Jockey Odo7

The power of smell: Aroma Jockey Odo7

Most festivals, live performances, theater and cinema use sight and sound – but what if the use of smell was used? Aroma Jockey Odo7 has created a form of “aroma illustration” or “aroma jockeying” that he does for events and groups.

Researchers say that the sense of smell is by far the most powerful of all our senses and that it is a “direct extension of the brain.”  Its direct contact means we get a very quick, very intensive reaction to odor.  Smells have a relationship to emotions, sounds, colors, and culture.  Odo7 explores how the chemical and biological can be presented within an atmosphere that renews itself through the use of 7 main groups of aromatic elements.

Odo7 who is currently living in Amsterdam, Netherlands has established the conscious use of scents in entertainment scenting.  In 2002, Odo7 worked with a “civelrevoltage” artist group to create a visual and sound experience.  He has worked with Isabella Rosselini on a project in Amsterdam, and his other clients include J.P. Gaultier and Tommy Hilfiger.

His website presents some of the  history and the value of aroma and scent – and can be seen at hwww.odo7.com.

Dinner Theater: Past, Present and Future?

Dinner Theater: Past, Present and Future?

A few years ago I developed a proposal for a interactive dinner show project which aimed to promote environmental issues and to be used as a fundraiser for non-profits and groups.

While working on the proposal, I did research about the dinner theater genre.  I think this genre has potential recently found this information, and thought I would share about this performance genre where food and live entertainment are combined.

Dinner theater is what it sounds like – a live show within a restaurant where eating a meal is combined with a staged play or performance.

The oldest and longest-running dinner theater in America is The Barn Dinner Theater in Greensboro, NC, which was founded in 1962.  When the theater started, the performance’s cast not only acted on stage, they were the waiters and waitresses as well.

The 1970s were the heyday of dinner theaters, which usually provided popular regional entertainment for local audiences. The shows usually featured popular movie stars in the productions.

Today there are a number of dinner theater or interactive dinner events that combine food and performance and range from providing entertainment, audience participation, and even a couple that aim to promote awareness about an issue.

Some examples of Dinner Theater:

The Hunger Banquet
Since 1974, groups have been hosting Oxfam America Hunger Banquets in homes, campuses, schools, and spiritual institutions around the country.  At an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, guests randomly draw tickets that assign them to different income levels, based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. Depending on where they sit, some receive a filling dinner, while others eat a simple meal or share sparse portions of rice and water.

At the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet guests can also take on the roles of real people from around the world and share their experiences with others. While not all guests leave with full stomachs, many gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty—and will feel motivated to do something to help.

Bitter Melon Council  Aside/Inside event
Bitter Melon [A]side/[In]side was a 70 people-banquet event created for Grantsmakers in the Arts pre-conference in collaboration with P-Town Parties. The chef was challenged to develop dishes that, while incorporating a significant amount of Bitter Melon, do not have a bitter taste. These specific dishes, developed by the caterer, were accompanied by condiments and garnishes created by the Bitter Melon Council.  The Bitter Melon Council is a group devoted to the cultivation of a vibrant, diverse community through the promotion and distribution of Bitter Melon. Their projects, events, and festivals celebrate the health, social, culinary, and creative possibilities of the bitter melon vegetable.

Medieval times
At the “medieval times feast” costumed servers deliver four courses to guests who watch a medieval show while eating garlic bread and a steaming hot vegetable soup ladled into pewter bowls, roasted chicken, spare rib, a seasoned potato and pastry.  Guests usually watch jousting and other medieval games in a arena-like setting.

Tony and Tina’s Comedy Wedding
This interactive show invites the audience to be the guests at a “traditional” wedding. Guests are invited to dance, sing – all while eating dinner in  a mock wedding reception atmosphere. This show has been running for many years, and got attention for how it blurred the boundaries between fantasy and reality.

Princess Tea at Disneyworld
Want to have tea with a princess?  A tea party, designed for young girls is held regularly at the Disney World Grand Floridian Resort.  At the event there are sing-alongs, stories, and a visit from Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty) or Rose Petal. Girls are encouraged to wear their favorite princess dress.  At the Tea there is a menu for both adults and children.

Country Bear Jamboree at Disneyworld
Robotic bears sing and put on a show while guests eat chicken and cornbread.
(I went to this at the age of 6 and loved it.)

Titanic Theater Restaurant
This show and restaurant is on a boat. Guests are invited to dress in period costume, and experience a show about the last night on the Titantic.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
Dinner and a murder mystery.  People sometimes host this in their own homes  – (I saw this on one of the Bravo Housewives shows) or this can be experienced in a  theater.
