Food Font at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, NC

Food Font at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, NC

The Food Font Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, NC went well yesterday.  Lots of people stopped by and made letters out of peppers from Peregrine Farm.   There were two types of peppers – purple bells and cubanelles.

We had a short break when a rainstorm came through, when everyone went under the overhang area of Carrboro to stay dry.  Soon the rain stopped, the jazz band started up again, and we set up the alphabet area and continued making the Weaver Street – Peregrine Farm Pepper alphabet.  Thanks to everyone that came out for the event.

Pictures from the event as well as the images of the alphabet can be seen on the Flickr site.
Below are slideshows from the event.  (NOTE: if you are on some mobile devices the slideshows will not show up since they are made with Flash so view the pictures from the Flickr site.)

Got Petroleum In You or On You? This Weekend in Buffalo, NY

Got Petroleum In You or On You? This Weekend in Buffalo, NY

Petroleum is everywhere. From the shoes that we wear, to the zippers on our jackets, to the aspirin that we take for headaches – it all has petroleum in it.

This Saturday,  my interactive performance Petroleum In You or On You will be in Buffalo, NY as part of the opening weekend of the Buffalo Infringement Festival.

In a unique twist to the scavenger hunt, visitors will be invited to check their clothes, bodies and purses to see what they have on them that originate from petroleum and compete for a special souvenir prize.  Pictures will be taken of what people have on them and their count of items will be tracked during the event.

Do you see petroleum when you look in the mirror? You just might after you participate in this interactive performance.

Petroleum In Me and On Me will be at the Buffalo Infringement festival on July 28th.  Stop by between 7-9 pm at Barfly (162 Elmwood Ave.) and check yourself for petroleum.  Every 30 minutes will be a winner!

The location of the performance and the list of petroleum products can be seen on Google Maps at this link: http://awe.sm/h0GoM.

Location and time:

7pm – 9pm Buffalo Barfly  162 Elmwood Avenue Buffalo, NY

Rest in Piece – Good Citizen Portable Flagpole/Cart, Portable Cheesekick Contraption, Oil Rig Hangers and Oil Toybox

Rest in Piece – Good Citizen Portable Flagpole/Cart, Portable Cheesekick Contraption, Oil Rig Hangers and Oil Toybox

Part of being a mid-career artist is that you end up with lots of old projects and art in your attic, studio, and storage areas.
Over time, I decide to keep only key elements or what I think are the best pieces and move the other work out of my space.
I recently recycled some of my old set lists from performances, donated some props and costumes from shows to the thrift store, and recycled some of my old video footage tapes that were not the final masters.

Each year I seem to value space more than keeping all my old objects. This past weekend was a big project – moving out some of my old steel sculptures and objects from projects.

This past weekend I made a trip to the scrapyard and brought some of my past steel objects which included:

– My Good Citizen Portable Flagpole/ Cart – which I used to wheel around Oakland, CA in the role of Good Citizen in the Good Citizen Project in 1994
– My Portable Cheesekick Contraption – from my Buns of Butter project (where you could put a huge hunk of cheese in it – and kick it as a workout)
– My Oil Rig Hangers and Oil Toybox – from my Stretching Oil Production Installation

For my steel objects I got $48.00 –  and a bunch of space in my basement and attic.

May they rest in piece.

Kbaumlier Food Images on a Billboard in the Detroit Metro Area until June 24th, 2012

Kbaumlier Food Images on a Billboard in the Detroit Metro Area until June 24th, 2012

Yesterday the Digital Billboard Art Project went live –  a project where artists can submit images to be displayed on a public digital billboard.  I have 45  images that are showing startinh yesterday, May 28th,  and will run until  June 24, 2012 in the Detroit Metro area (Macomb County), MI.

I submitted slides about food – and made a series of images where foods are shown in both abstract and recognizable views, combined with words and slogans often used by advertisers to promote packaged food.  A tomato with the word “SAME GREAT TASTE,” a papaya with the words “50% LESS FAT*” and images of rice, soybeans, a peach, and cheese are in the series.

Each of the food featured in the series has an interesting story related to genetic engineering or modern farming practices.  I am interested to have the images show in Detroit, a city where it is reported that over half of the residents do not have easy access to nutritious food.

If you live in the Detroit area you can see the billboard in Utica, facing west and can be seen by traffic traveling east bound on Hall Rd (M-59). The billboard can also be seen from a parking lot shared by Muldoon’s Restaurant at 7636 Auburn Road and the Utica Fire and Police Department. My pieces are 7 minutes of the entire 24 hour loop – and will be seen at : 1:09 AM, 3:29 AM, 5:49 AM, 8:09 AM, 10:29 AM, 12:49 PM, 3:09 PM, 5:29 PM. 7:49 PM, 10:09 PM.

The Billboard Art Project is a project that acquires digital billboards normally used for advertising and repurposes them as roadside galleries – showing images from artists. Types of work that may be displayed include images created specifically for the billboard as well as images of previously made art adapted to the format. No two Billboard Art Project shows are alike; each city features new work.

This year upcoming shows include other locations such as Richmond, VA; Salem, OR; Albany, NY, and Atlanta, GA.  The Detroit show is unique in that the images will be up in a month.   Documentation of the billboard is not up yet  – I will post when the roadside photos of the Billboard Art project are posted in Flickr.
